Wizards of the Coast now are trying to reflect these changes in the core rules. For many years, D&D has conferred certain mechanical bonuses: elves are more agile, dwarves tougher, gnomes more intelligent. Make the fact that you're a gnome or an elf or whatever be part of the story, not how many dice you can roll.
