The vampire is a creature that has been around since ancient times in mythologies such as Greece's
tales about monsters like "Orpheus' wife" Eurybia and the god Asphodelus, who would suck out blood
from unwary travelers on his horse. In modern fantasy novels by authors including Anne Rice,
Stephenie Meyer (as with her Twilight series), LJ Smith, Jodi Picoult, James Patterson's Cross of
Light Series featuring Caleb Morley as well as others like Joe Abercrombie and Tim Powers the
vampire has become a popular character type in science fiction. The trope is often associated with
supernatural creatures that drink blood from their victims or who are otherwise able to survive on
animal flesh (hence being "drunken"), but it can also apply more broadly, especially if vampires
have some sort of weakness they must exploit and do not die like regular mortals would due the way a
vampire's body has evolved. The trope is known for its gothic appeal with blood-sucking creatures in
dark settings having an air of danger that draws readers to their stories or even encourages them to
write about such events themselves, as seen by Anne Rice writing "Interview" and her Twilight series
featuring vampires from the time period they inhabit who are able bodied
