A card-based roleplaying gaming set in a setting inspired by Alexandre Dumas' Count de Saint LaZare
(or "The Man Who Was Afraid"), where players take on various roles as villains plotting their
revenge against an innocent victim, who is slowly destroyed over the course of decades. The game
requires no prep and can be played immediately with simple card prompts for each character's story
arc to create a satisfying conclusion in which one player takes control of "The Knife," playing
through all four acts before resolving cards that reveal the conspiracy behind their villainous
characters' dishonorable lives, setting up an explosive finale on board art pieces. The game has
been written by Elizabeth Bear and can be played with no prep required for players to create a world
from scratch or begin play in three pre-written playsets (each inspired by different works).
