In the turn of 30th century, humanity began to extend greed among stars by harvesting minerals from unknown planets they discovered in their travels. One such planet was a previously unnoticed moon orbiting Neptune that contained large underwater volcanoes creating an ideal environment suitable for life - almost entirely made up water with various organisms thriving deep within its oceans' depths. When the Leviathan surfaced every three years, it would surface to mate and then descend again into impenetrable waters without warning or reason until rescued by penal volunteer ships equipped with cheap survival suits covered in rags soaked from drilling through flesh of an enormous creature filled up with parasites that grew inside them once they were captured on-board. The game revolves around the player controlling a criminal volunteering to retrieve as much Ambergris treasure hidden within its guts, battling monstrous alien creatures and eventually facing off against their creator at last - "the Leviathan".
