Characters are rated by tiered dice (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12) to represent their Attributes and other features.  When tested, they roll 1 or more such dice, and may elect to "cascade" (roll the next lower tier(s) of dice) to assist in succeeding tests, but risking gaining Fatigue - which reduces their attributes for future tests - potentially leading to a spiral of character decline and death.   Tables borrowed/adapted from the superb Knave and Maze Rats.
