They have a strange connection to the Aether itself, and were natural casters which could open rifts with little to no training. Rifts opened inside these epicenters, and from them poured thousands of strangely altered humans. With no memory of the time before the war or rifts, it took them years to reacclimate to the real world, time in which none aged.
