This is a detailed update on transportation technology during this time period in US history
(1905). With more than 3 million miles traveled each year by automobile and railway combined, it was
clear that America's roads were getting busier with each passing day! + The development of
the internal combustion engine had made automobiles possible for everyday use. At first they cost
$8k but increased to around 3500 in 1918 (still a hefty sum). By 1925 over 11 million cars and
trucks would be registered, making it one out every five households owning an automobile by 1930s
standards. + Although there were not yet any paved roads with interstates running from coast-
to-coast during this time period because of the prohibitive costs involved in building them (between
$5 to 10 million for just a single 8 mile stretch), it was hoped that these highways would help
speed up travel times and reduce road congestion. + The development of rubberized tires also
played an important role, enabling cars with smaller rims from being able to safely drive on rough
terrain without getting bogged down in mud or snowdrifts (in part because the roads were already
