Marianne Estaislao, a young woman with her parents' deaths to account for (her folks were killed by some Landlord goons), returns home in disgrace after an attempt at the convent failed as she was able but did not want to leave behind other girls; this causes division among village folk. Some are sympathetic towards Marianne's plight while others remain unconvinced, casting doubt over her story of leaving and calling for reprisal from Landlord forces if action is taken against them by villagers who have resolved on taking matters into their own hands despite forgiveness being an irrelevant concept in the aftermath of The Last War that saw such destruction.
