It’s 1808.

Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has tightened his grip across a defeated Europe. He has just placed his brother, Jose I, on the Spanish throne. Spanish nobles and commoners alike are opposing the French occupation. 

Only Portugal and Britain still oppose the French Empire. Britain begins their offensive from Portugal, hoping to strike deep into occupied territory and push the French back across the Pyrenees.

The Peninsular Wars represent a tumultuous time in Europe's history with the rapid expansion of France under Napoleon Bonaparte and his invasion into Spain and Portugal. 

By default it assumed that the PCs will be Redcoats, in the service of King George III and likely serving under officers following Sir Arthur Wellesley. It's possible, though, they might choose to be French troops following the dictates of Napoleon, the emperor of France. With only a little change, it's possible to switch sides.

Their adventures should not be solemn marches towards a column of enemy troops. They should selected for special duty as "Chosen Men" (or the "Vrai Bougre" in the French Imperial Army). This means usually a sergeant or lieutenant, detached from a company, performing a mission.
