Unholy Fire is an adventure role-playing video game in which the player must uncover a cold war conspiracy to end humanity by causing global destruction through massive natural disasters or other catastrophic events that trigger nuclear reactions across entire continents. The objective of each mission involves rolling dice and journaling, with challenges involving environmental hazards such as volcanoes erupting from fissures in Earth's crust; this can be overcome if the player manages to prevent a catastrophe before it occurs by completing puzzles related to weather patterns or other meteorological phenomena that trigger seismic activity on various land masses.
