Long ago, a fox, monkey, and rabbit played together in a village. The emperor of heaven disguised himself as a beggar and asked each creature to bring him something to eat to test their loyalty. The fox brought fish and the monkey brought fruit. The rabbit felt ashamed to offer grass only, so it lit the grass on fire and offered itself to the emperor instead. The emperor was moved and made the rabbit the guardian of the moon. The daltokki (moon rabbit) contributes to the bountiful harvest during Chuseok (Korean Autumn harvest festival).
If you look closely at the moon, you can maybe spot the outline of a rabbit using a mortar and pestle to make rice cakes!
