The DM will ask a question like this, with a bigger range being harder, and then you'll try to guess their number. Your character also has attributes, and if you can argue that an attribute applies to a specific task, then your guess can be off by that amount. So if 3 of your 5 attributes would help when jumping to the gap between buildings, you can be off of the guess by 3.
