A young woman embarks on an adventure in a small rural community where she discovers that something unsettling, like "The Happening," has happened at night for decades with no explanation from anyone except local rumors of supernatural phenomena and folklore stories about witches or demons possessing people. With the help of her friend who is visiting town to spend time together without worrying their parents' approval on a long weekend away in 1910 during summertime, they venture out into Burnsley's quaint streets but face dangerous situations like driving drunk off-road trails with no traffic control and finding mysterious men dressed as hunters near streams or abandoned buildings. The group eventually discovers that the town has been terrorizing its own people for decades without any consequences to speak of until their friends' arrival in summer brings an end to these unearthly occurrences while they finally learn about "The Happening" and embrace a new sense of adventure and excitement with one another, leaving behind past worries from being on edge as the sun sets over Burnsley.
