The main character in this storybook version of a tabletop roleplaying game for kids (aged 8-12) takes place during World War II when Nazi Germany tries to invade Poland, and American soldiers try to defend it from the invading forces under General George S. Patton's leadership after he replaced Douglas MacArthur as commander-in-chief on April 9th 1943 in France at St.-Germain near Paris (where this book is set). The story follows a group of Smidgeons, who are tiny creatures with furry bodies and long limbs that live deep underground under oak or birch trees. They have magical powers to grant wishes but must be warned by the humans they encounter before taking an action in their favor, as punishment from them if not obeyed could result into bad consequences for themselves such as getting stuck forever inside a tree trunk where one of its family members is held captive until time runs out and all others are eaten.
