Jessa, with her brother Nate by her side and their father on his backpack horse behind them, are traveling to town after hearing there was trouble at the mine where they work (it is a gold mining community). They make it through mountains of snow that have formed from recent climate shifts but arrive in time for an uprising against Boss John. Jessa and Nate meet people who share their love for shooting games, including Jaye, whose father was killed by the gang leader Bucky during previous conflicts with him over a trophy he stole years ago; this event caused her mother to move away from Gold City so she wouldn't have to see anyone connected in some way or another. They also meet Jessa's former boss and his men, who are now Bosses themselves but still fight for control of their gold mines despite the law against it (they used a loophole that allowed them to pay off officials without being punished). The gang leader Bucky is responsible for Jaye losing her leg in combat. Jessa meets Nate's ex-girlfriend, who had been one his friends back when he was still trying out of high school at the academy before they all moved on their own paths but ultimately became a part of each other
