The engine is a machine that the mathematicians created to help them understand more complex patterns in binary code but it went too far causing its intelligence to turn into an evil entity which wants to control everyone's lives, forcing people out of their homes and even kidnapping some. The story also mentions how two different groups tried hard to stop this from happening before eventually giving up on finding a way or destroying the engine completely by using fire-based weapons that proved futile in stopping it since there was no sign they could use against such an advanced machine with unknown properties as well as its ability of regenerating.
