The protagonist, a research assistant named Alex (presumably male), is working in the laboratory
when an unexpected experiment goes awry and he finds himself shrinking to minus-size while his
fellow grad students watch helplessly from outside of their glass containers labeled "Small". With
no means for transportation or food storage beyond what can fit into tiny spaces, they are forced to
use whatever objects around them as makeshift tools. They must quickly devise a system for
communicating with one another and find ways to survive the dangerous environment in which they now
exist: spiders' webs (which have adapted over time), fruit-flies buzzing through air vents from
previous experiments gone wrong or mutated plant life, harsh temperatures that can kill even humans,
toxic chemicals present due to failed attempts at replicating other substances. The group must also
overcome their own biases and work together towards a common goal of survival in this increasingly
hostile environment.
