Outlier is a single-player game in which players take on roles of research assistants working to complete tasks around an unknown laboratory environment before time runs out and the study's funding dries up. Players must collect data, perform unpredictable work throughout various lab areas using different tools or methods, collaborate with other participants such as clones (like The Thing from Doctor Who), manage a limited budget within certain parameters set by their job description to avoid getting canned while dealing with bizarre occurrences that may arise in the laboratory setting of Outlier. A game mechanic called "tumbling block tower" is also an optional feature, but it can greatly enhance gameplay and create even more possibilities for creative puzzles solving or environmental hazards manipulation within a lab environment as players navigate through research procedures involving unusual materials (such as time travel devices). The ultimate goal of the player in Outliers must be to collect all data points before running out on funding while also dealing with unpredictable situations that may arise due to various laboratory experiments, such as "cryptids" or cloning technology.
